Brexlog: May's Funpark

Last week was really a Brexit joy ride.   Slides, u-turns and rollercoasters were the order of the week thanks to PM May. She has really given us an amusement park for our enjoyment.

The first ride given by May was the (in)famous Westminster vote. While Europe was patiently waiting for the vote in Westminster, just like a slow painful countdown to end a saga, May surprised all with a postponement, of course only after she was certain that her deal would be vehemently rejected. However, this gave a twist that surely no one expected. While May began touring Europe in a desperate attempt to get something to present it to her Parliament, a vote of (non) confidence within her own Conservative Party was pushed to be done on Wednesday. A vote of confidence was being anticipated, only that it was expected to be in Parliament rather than within its own party.  Back to the UK and cancelling scheduled meetings with a few of her European counterparts,  May skipped this hurdle and won this vote by 200 votes to 117. However, the Conservative party is now more weakened and divided as it has ever been.

Following this, May took off to Brussels for another desperate attempt for renegotiation in the European Summit. Only that this attempt  blew up in her face, as EU leaders said that there is no further possibilities for renegotiations, but only for further clarifications. Thus, the only way forward for Britain is to hold a vote on May’s deal by the 21st of January or to come up with a plan B. Since up till now there is no plan B, Britain is heading for a political crisis or better yet is in a political crisis. In fact, one senior Conservative MP remarked that this crisis is a revolution that engulfed both major parties.

In view of this, one may question how long can Theresa May survive as Prime Minister. If May’s strategy fails, she will be indeed in great difficulty. This week is definitely one to be remembered as the revolution of Brexit has become more vicious than ever.

I only wonder what could be next, but till then, Happy Holidays.

Including to you, Ms May!
